Job Description:

Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin, invites applicants to the open position of Counselor. Professional counselors at Madison College provide culturally responsive mental health counseling services that address the complex academic, social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral health needs of students enrolled in our courses and programs. Counselors provide individual and group counseling in such areas as personal, educational, career development, interpersonal relationships, conflict management, risk assessment, crisis management, and psychological issues. This position focuses on providing outreach aimed at promoting skills to help students strengthen their mental health, as well as prevention and intervention programming for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA). They also play a key role in ensuring compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Act by overseeing and drafting the biennial review reports.

Our counselors assist students' progress toward their educational goal attainment through collaboration with faculty, academic advisors, and student affairs staff as appropriate. Counselors develop and engage in collaborative activities and partnerships across our college community to support student success, mental health, and personal well-being. Counselors possess a strong knowledge of current student needs with extensive professional skills. Counselors' understanding and expertise in the area of student development informs their College Success course instruction. This position requires an ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle information with tact and diplomacy.

This position reports to the Associate Vice President, Dean of Students, who oversees counseling and college success services district-wide.

Position/pay reflects a 44 non-consecutive weeks per year contract. Start date August 14, 2025.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provides solution-focus mental health counseling and crisis intervention to address a wide range of inter/intrapersonal, social, emotional, psychological, behavioral health, and developmental needs of Madison College's diverse student population.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates AODA prevention and intervention programs to educate students and the campus community on substance use, harm reduction, and responsible decision-making. Oversees and drafts the Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Biennial Review Report, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and best practices in substance use prevention.
  • Provides comprehensive assessments, case planning, and management of an array of student issues and concerns informed by evidence-based clinical practices; Assists in resolving acute mental health emergencies and crisis situations. Conducts risk assessments of students with presenting lethality concerns (harm towards self or others).
  • Provides consultation regarding complex student interpersonal conflicts, crises, behavioral and mental health concerns to the college community (students and college employees). Provides educational programs and outreach to address campus issues, including AODA and mental health topics.
  • Provides instruction and develops curriculum for credit and non-credit courses (e.g., College Success, Learning to Learn, Career Development, Study Skills, Life Management, Conflict Management, etc.). Provides staff and faculty training in student development, mental and behavioral health, conflict management, and crisis response to student situations.
  • Provides academic counseling, career counseling, and career planning workshops to address a wide range of developmental needs of Madison College's diverse student population.
  • Observes professional, ethical codes of conduct, and legal and licensure requirements relevant to mental health counseling, clinical social work, and other related professions. Counsels students regarding Student Code of Conduct issues, formal and informal conflict management strategies, and student conduct administration.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Expertise in AODA prevention, intervention, and treatment principles, along with solid understanding of evidence-based practices for addressing substance use concerns. Familiarity with state and federal regulations regarding substance use prevention in higher education, including Drug-Free Schools and Campuses Act. Experience in implementing mental health promotion outreach.
  • Knowledge and ability to effectively apply advanced mental health counseling principles, methods, techniques, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders (e.g., anxiety and depression). Understanding of addiction psychology, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, race, ethnicity, and cultures and their history and origins; equity and inclusion principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill in effective and professional communication (orally and in writing) and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of individual and group clinical techniques grounded in counseling theory, practice, and student development philosophy.
  • Knowledge and experience counseling traditional and nontraditional age populations with diverse backgrounds and working with individuals who have mental health and/or AODA challenges.
  • Ability to effectively assess and manage student crisis and conflict situations. Demonstrated skill in conducting student risk assessments related to harm toward self/others and substance use and mental health crises.
  • Demonstrated skill in providing culturally responsive/competent mental health counseling services and course instruction and teaching student development curriculum.
  • Knowledge of organizations that serve communities of color, the economically disadvantaged, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQIA, and other special populations.


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Master's Degree in Counseling, social work, rehabilitation counseling, counseling psychology, psychology, or related field

2. Five years of experience to include:

-Three (3) years (6,000 hours) of direct clinical counseling/ mental health/AODA experience.

-Two (2) years (4,000 hours) of other mental health/AODA experience.*

3. Must be licensed as a professional counselor, clinical social worker, or a related field such as a marriage and family therapist, psychotherapist, or psychologist in Wisconsin.**

Preferred Qualifications:

*A minimum of two (2) years (4,000 hours) of experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating AODA and mental health prevention and intervention programs, including outreach and awareness initiatives.

**Licensed Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) in Wisconsin.

Bilingual (Spanish, Hmong, or Arabic preferred).
