Job Summary

Entry level position, responsible for recruitment and evaluation of prospective students. Serve as program logistics coordinator for all events hosted by the Office of Admission. Perform specified duties of Admission Counselor; other duties as assigned by the dean of admission.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

Admission Counselor (40%)
  • Plan and coordinate approximately 6 - 8 weeks of travel to recruit students.
  • Visit local high schools, attend local college fairs.
  • Initiate and maintain effective communication between Smith College and college counselors from a diverse range of high schools.
  • Manage correspondence and conversations with students, parents, counselor, community based organizations and other constituencies.
  • Train for and present on-campus and/or virtual information sessions when needed.


Admission Program Logistics Coordination (20%)
  • Coordinate all arrangements related to on-campus and off-campus programming sponsored by the Office of Admission, including but not limited to admitted student programs and other events involving Smith students.
  • Assess and manage event space, catering, and resource requirements for groups ranging from 5 - 1000 people.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with the admission office operations staff, campus constituents (faculty, staff, students, alumnae) and campus visitors.
  • Arrange for and approve event contracts and events related supplies.
  • Negotiate prices and resolve billing disputes.
  • Support STRIDE merit scholarship program.


Admission Reading and Selection (30%)
  • Read, evaluate, and participate in admission committee work to decide on admissibility of approximately 1000 candidates for admission to the college in coordination with a team of colleagues under the direction of the Dean of Admission. Candidates may include first-years and/or transfer applicants.


Other Functions

Professional Development (10%)
  • Develop skills and connections and pursue professional development opportunities to better understand current issues and challenges in the field of admission and in Higher Education.
  • All employees are expected to participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.


Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
  • Bachelor's degree and/or combination of education and relevant experience. Individual must hold a valid driver's license and be able and willing to participate in both car and airplane travel.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a higher education environment; fluency with a variety of computer software platforms; high comfort level with public speaking to large and small groups.
  • Demonstrated interest in event planning and admission work.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience in an office of admission at a college or university preferred.


Skills

The ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects simultaneously including event planning and budget experience. Strong technological skills including experience with Slate, or similar CRM. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite and Workday system. Strong written and oral communication skills; accuracy and attention to detail; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work as part of a team. Ability to use sound judgment, creativity, and vision.

Some Saturday and evening hours required.
