Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the Educational College Counselor to provide support and educational guidance to our students and to participate in processes that will result in continuous improvement of instruction and programs, student success and completion, and advancement of the vision, mission, and values of Shasta College.

All Temporary Part-time Counselors are compensated in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District and Shasta College Faculty Association/CTA/NEA.

PACE Description:

Partners in Access to College Education (PACE) is a district-wide student services program providing accommodations to students with disabilities. PACE Counselors collaborate with students to assess their educational requirements and approve suitable academic adjustments and accommodations. Key responsibilities include reviewing disability documentation, conducting intake sessions for new students, providing academic advising, referring students to campus and community resources, offering disability counseling, and participating in recruitment and departmental events.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability


This Part-Time Counselor role involves working up to 900 hours throughout the academic year (July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026), averaging 20-28 hours per week. The position is based at the Shasta College Redding campus and may involve day and evening hours in an online/distance format.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate that they are broadly prepared and have a depth of knowledge in the discipline. In addition, successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities:
  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA, and Title 5 state regulations.
  • Proficiency in reviewing medical documentation, such as psycho-educational evaluation reports, IEPs, and 504 plans, to assess a student's functional limitations and determine eligibility for appropriate disability accommodations and services.
  • Develop Academic Accommodation Plans (AAPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Provide specialized academic, career, personal, and disability management counseling to students with disabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;
  • Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals;
  • Ability to design and deliver courses, including those offered in different modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid);
  • Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges and universities;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency;
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes;
  • Knowledge of and willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices that would benefit students and programs;
  • Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Continue to develop professional skills and remain current in subject matter knowledge.
  • Keep and submit official records required by District policy and administrative procedures.
  • Abide by District policies concerning District property and safety.
  • Report absences due to illness or for personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
  • Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Fulfill all obligations as established in the current collective bargaining agreement.

Other Activities:
Part-time faculty are encouraged to engage in the following activities, but these are not required. Some of these activities may be eligible for flex pay or stipends.
  • Schedule and maintain office hour days and times and ensure that they are clearly communicated to announce to students in all classes and to division staff, and maintain office hours.
  • Participate in the process of participatory governance through District participatory, ad hoc, or advisory committees.
  • Participate in the curriculum review process within established cycles; develop new courses in response to student or community needs.
  • Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.
  • Attend and participate in department and division meetings.
  • Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning outcomes processes.
  • Participate in required professional development activities that result in improved pedagogy leading to student success and completion.


Experience/Education


  • Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling

OR
  • Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
    • (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or
    • (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

The state of California has established minimum qualifications for academic positions in California Community Colleges to promote professionalism, instructional integrity, and academic rigor. The primary minimum qualification for academic positions is an advanced degree in the relevant subject matter for the position.
