PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Financial Aid Director, Associate Director and the Financial Aid Lead Counselor, the Financial Aid Counselor performs a variety of basic and complex student services work characterized by advising, technical and administrative duties in support of the students applying for Financial Aid.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Reviews financial aid applications for eligibility, correctness and completeness maintaining a high level of confidentiality. With support, performs verification of reported student and parent data in compliance with federal and state regulations. Reviews and packages student awards as necessary, following federal, state and institutional policies and procedures.
  • In collaboration with the Lead Counselor, advises students regarding the interpretation of the federal, state and institutional rules and regulations surrounding the various financial aid programs. Will conduct workshops on various financial aid topics that involve financial aid eligibility such as SAP, Entrance & Exit Loan counseling while adhering to the university policies and procedures. Will continue to attend different trainings to acquire and maintain knowledge of policies and procedures pertinent to needs analysis, student budgets, packaging, and various state and federal programs.
  • Provides telephone and front counter reception hours as needed to include but not limited to assisting students, parents, and various campus staff and faculty regarding a variety of financial aid inquiries and concerns in person, over the phone and/or via zoom. Will provide support to various Financial Aid Counselors on federal, state and institutional programs as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Lead Counselor, conducts various financial aid outreach events in-house at school orientations, open house, as well as other outreach community events held at the various local high schools, middle schools, colleges and universities as needed.

Other Functions:

Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; and the techniques and methods of interviewing.

Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: None required. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired -and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Counselor Experience in a Financial Aid Office in a comparable four-year institution. Second language proficiency. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System, or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Hyperion, internet and intranet browsers, and Google mail and calendaring programs. Experience with electronic transfer of data, and other automated systems involved in a financial aid office.

  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.
