Basic Function


Porterville College is seeking a faculty member for a one year full time temporary Counselor Instructor, CTE/Dual Enrollment for Porterville College location. History of Porterville College:

Porterville College was established in 1927 as a part of the Porterville Union High School and College District and has been a unit of the Kern Community College District since July 1, 1967. Porterville College is the northernmost college in the Kern Community College District, which serves an area of some 24,000 square miles in all or portions of Kern, Tulare, Inyo, and San Bernardino Counties.

Porterville College is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), providing educational opportunities for approximately 4,500 full and part time students each year. Our College has been serving the community and providing quality education since its founding.

Porterville College was recently the recipient of the MacKenzie Scott Foundation award and recognized as one of the "Teams Empowering Voices the World Needs to Hear"

Porterville lies against the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in southeast Tulare County. It is the gateway to a vast mountain wonderland and recreational area. There are recreation activities at Lake Success, plenty of outdoor activities in the mountains, and ample family activities year-round and

Porterville is centrally located between southern and northern California metropolitans, with a three-hour drive to Los Angeles and a four-hour drive to San Francisco. It is within three hours commuting time to the seashores of the Pacific. With the lower cost of living and central location in California Porterville is a great area to live.

Representative Duties

The successful candidate will provide academic, vocational, and career counseling to all students with a particular emphasis on Career Technical Education (CTE) and Dual Enrollment students and assist with coordination and implementation of the college's Student Success Plan and matriculation process.

Counselors provide the expertise, initiative and leadership to successfully plan for educational or career paths and overcome any academic, vocational or personal barriers to their achieving those goals

Other duties include: participation in student recruitment and articulation, transfer programs; maintaining subject matter currency; developing and revising curriculum; using computer and technology; assessment of program learning outcomes; collegial participation in departmental, college and discipline-specific professional activities. The Counselor will work with the Dean of Student Success and Counseling and the Program Director of Dual Enrollment and CTE.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling,

OR the equivalent (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

AND
A demonstrated sensitivity to and with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Community college counseling experience. Experience in a leadership capacity.
  • An Understanding of the advantages and challenges of developing a quality counseling program in a rural community college with multiple sites.
  • Experience working with CTE Programs and students and with the development of Career Pathways.
  • Ability to work with students having a wide range of skills, motivation, and academic or occupational goals.
  • Experience with outreach to K-12, community and business partners.
  • Ability and experience in using computer technology as a counseling/advising tool.
  • Experience with or interest in online and other distance learning student services. Ability to assist students in establishing goals and appropriate educational plans. Experience in curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching personal development, counseling and other related areas.
  • Experience in developing new courses.
  • Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technologies like instructional television.
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively with community support groups, college committees, and other campus organizations and to be involved in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
  • An understanding of the advantages and challenges for developing a quality program in the humanities and social sciences at a rural community college. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to deliver instruction using strategies designed for diverse learning styles. Demonstrated ability to design goals and assess learning outcome

Knowledge and Abilities


  • Provide educational counseling and advisement, career counseling, and testing services to students on site and online.
  • Assist in the development of Career Technical
  • Education and Dual Enrollment activities. Maintain individual records on counselees.
  • Develop and conduct workshops relevant to CTE, dual-enrollment and student success.
  • Provide ongoing information and relevant training to high school counselors regarding dual enrollment matriculation, course pre-requisites, and early college pathways.
  • Provide matriculation services for students and track potential graduates.
  • Outreach to CTE courses each semester to discuss CTE related programs and activity opportunities.
  • Participate in retention and outreach efforts.
  • Complete unofficial transcript evaluation. Identify special student needs
  • Participate in recruiting and articulation activities with local schools, other community college, four-year colleges, community agencies and employers. Teach counseling or personal development classes.
  • Serve on college-wide committees.
  • Serve as liaison to community agencies and local employers. Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate versatility in instructional methodology and technology and the ability to serve diverse student populations.
  • Plan, develop, and implement course curricula including curricula to be delivered via distance learning.
  • Update course materials and course outlines of record. Develop, maintain, and assess student learning outcomes.
  • Maintain a current syllabus and provide current course orientation materials for each assigned course.
  • Post and maintain scheduled office hours.
  • Attend and actively contribute to meetings or activities pertinent to faculty responsibilities or assignments including but not limited to department meetings, advisory committee meetings, and academic senate.
  • Use media aids, the library, and other resources as appropriate. Maintain currency in subject matter and developments in the field.
